Alex Salmond begs SNP supporters for cash to fund independence rally
Jul 22 2012 Exclusive by Mark Aitken, Sunday Mail

Alex Salmond during First Minister's Questions

ALEX SALMOND has put out the begging bowl for cash for a Yes vote rally.
The First Minister has urged independence supporters to help pay for a march and rally featuring comic Hardeep Singh Kohli in Edinburgh in September. He wants the cash from the grassroots despite £1million donations to the independence campaign by lottery millionaires Colin and Chris Weir and late poet Edwin Morgan.

Organisers are already so desperate to raise funds for the event that they have resorted to buying EuroMillions lottery tickets. The rally, to be held in Princes Street Gardens on Saturday, September 22, will feature speeches from Salmond, Kohli, independent MSP Margo MacDonald and Green MSP Patrick Harvie.

In an email to supporters, Salmond said: “As with all major events, it takes funds to organise, stage and – most importantly – publicise the march and rally. “A fantastic small team of unpaid volunteers need your help to reach as many people in Scotland in the next 10 weeks.

“Plans have been made to reach fellow Scots through traditional means such as newspaper advertising, posters, mobile poster vans and also leafleting. “Every pound the organisers receive goes towards the promotion and staging of the march and rally.” As well as donations, organisers are looking for stewards and “clean-up assistants”.

Organisers are also offering subsidised bus travel to the event from 12 towns, from Fort William to Ayr. But Labour MP Ian Murray said: “All the stunts in the world won’t distract from the fact the vast majority of Scots completely disagree with the faltering campaign for independence.

“Fleecing party members for cash is a bit rich when taxpayers will foot the bill for the policing.” A copy of Salmond’s email was passed to us by an SNP activist, who said:“You have to wonder what the donations from the Weirs and Edwin Morgan are being spent on.

“The First Minister has a £2million war chest and yet is asking supporters to put their hands in their pockets for this.” Similar marches will be held in September next year and 2014, just weeks before Scots vote in a referendum.

This year’s organisers are offering supporters who sign up on a website a split of any EuroMillions cash. They promise winnings below £1000 will go to the rally fund, with anything more than that being split equally between the fund and signed up supporters

I hope he he is well and truly whacked when this referundum comes around, though I don't under-estimate the pull that nationalism has for many people. I also hope if he is whacked that will be the end of it, and we can get back to being the United Kingdom we once were.
