Yip,for a people who were out to pull the goverment down by all means possible including the murder of Protestants they were treated better than others who were doing the same in different countries in the world.

They say every picture tells a story and certainly these pictures show that they were as well off as Protestants and in some cases better off. One thing is certain they wern't the 'poor downtrodden' they made themselves out to be.

Between 1979 and 1981 O'Brien was editor-in-chief of The Observer newspaper in Britain. Shortly after starting as editor he sent a memo to Mary Holland, the Observer's Northern Ireland correspondent, whose coverage had won her the Journalist of the Year award:

“It is a very serious weakness of your coverage of Irish affairs that you are a very poor judge of Irish Catholics. That gifted and talkative community includes some of the most expert conmen and conwomen in the world and I believe you have been conned."

I think Conor Cruise O'Brien summed them up to a tee.

Yes a hundered per cent correct. There are some good honest irish people who know them and tell it as it is. 'if you get the name of an early riser then you can lie in bed to teatime.' They have sold themselves as the 'poor downtrodden' while at the same time murdering and maiming. If you can achieve that then you are on a winner. You can literally 'get away with murder' and nobody dare touch you. Stormont today is a good example of this.

Some photos of the Creggan Estate in Londonderry in the 1950s. It appears the estate was completed in 1960 as its 50th anniversary was marked in 2010. Bear in mind this estate was built during the watch of the Unionist goverment at Stormont. Also some othere built during this time were Andersontown,Ballymurphy,Turf Lodge,Bawnmore etc etc all Roman Catholic estates. These houses were far better than what many Protestants were living in. The main picture on the BBC site seems to show work going on, laying out the roads etc. The picture shown of the two people standing outseide the semi-detached house looks like it could have been built on the area to the right of the BBC main picture.

Protestant children from the 'Village' ask for leisure facilities in their area in the 1980s. No swimming pool on the Donegall Road, but two on the Falls Road both outdoor and indoor pools since at least the 1940s.

A picture is worth a thousand words. We must make sure the truth is heard. In Londonderry in the 1950s and 60s the Londonderry Corporation actually employed more Roman Catholic workers than Protestants according to Professor Buckland in the book a history of Northern Ireland.

That's what we need to present the truth of how things actually were. Professor Rose said something similar. An RC called Shea said that if you were employed by a Unionist Council or any NI government branch you were classed as a traitor by your fellow Catholics. This was an attitude which prevailed until the 1960s.

In Belfast wards were actually gerrymandered to favour Roman Catholics
