Apprentice Boys lead on 2013 Fund-Raising Intiative

Following on from this year’s Maiden City Festival, the Apprentice Boys of Derry General Committee has given its full backing to one of the Association’s eight Parent Club’s launching a charity fund-raising initiative to conclude in 2013 as Londonderry celebrates UK City of Culture year. The focus of the fund-raising endeavour will be the Altnagelvin Children’s Ward, Londonderry, and Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, London. The initiative is being undertaken in collaboration with the City Centre Initiative, Parade & Trade Forum. Taking the lead in the fund-raising efforts will be the Apprentice Boys of Derry Parent Club who kick started fund-raising efforts at the 322nd Relief of Londonderry parade by hauling a cannon the entire distance of the parade
route.

Trevor McKinley, Secretary of the ABOD Parent Club said, ‘The daughter of one of our members has been in the excellent care of Great Ormond Street. When the 2013 UK City of Culture was announced we thought it important to focus on what the year could mean for young people like Rachel Thompson. We also thought that in the year of the founding of the historic city of London~Derry that we should express that historic link between London and Londonderry in an imaginative way. ‘Our thanks to all those who have worked with Great Ormond Street and the Altnagelvin Children’s Ward to bring this idea together. We are really looking forward to two years of exceptional fund-raising by members of our Association across the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland and elsewhere. We are also looking forward to working with the City Centre businesses and all those in the City who want to join in this challenge. By the time of the 300th Anniversary of the Association in 2014, which starts with the 325th Commemorations in December 2013, we would like to have raised thousands of pounds for these two very worthwhile centres for children’s care.”

Yes Its good that folk can see that it not all just about parades. There is a generous side to all the loyal orders who have contributed many thousands to various charities and good causes.
