The crimson flag which flies from Londonderry’s St Columb’s Cathedral over the period of the Relief of Derry celebrations has been stolen from the roof of the famed old church.

Members of the Apprentice Boys of Derry (ABOD) have told of their disappointment at the theft of the flag from 100 feet up on the cathedral roof.
Its disappearance was noticed on Tuesday, but it may have been stolen on Monday night.
It is believed the flag may have been stolen to be placed on one of the nationalist bonfires in the city which are due to take place tonight.

The crimson flag has a long association with the church as it was first hoisted over St Columb’s by a hero of the Siege of Derry, Colonel Mitchelburne, in August 1714 when the first ABOD club was founded – and it has flown from the same spot every year since.
The colour crimson is the emblem of the ABOD - chosen to denote the blood of the citizens who died defending Londonderry in the siege of 1688-89.

The current flag was presented by the Mitchelburne Club of the ABOD around 20 years ago to St Columb’s Cathedral.
The theft came hours before another paintbomb attack on the Apprentice Boys Memorial Hall at 7pm on Tuesday.

I heard the flag was returned by political representatives of the INLA.
