Why are the ‘shrine’ objectors silent now?

Friday 24 February 2012 08:41

‘PROUD Citizen, Dungannon’ is to be congratulated on the excellent letter ‘Time to call a halt to Maze project’ (February 17).

The writer referred to what DUP politicians said at the time of the Maze stadium idea.

Let us refresh memories as to what some of these things were.

In a News Letter article, dated June 22, 2007, entitled ‘Not while it’s got a shrine to terrorists’, DUP MP Nigel Dodds is quoted thus, “It is quite clear now the price for Sinn Fein support for the Maze project including the stadium is a shrine to IRA terrorism. However it is dressed up, whatever spin is deployed, the preservation of a section of the H-Blocks – including the hospital wing – would become a shrine to the terrorists who committed suicide in the Maze in the 1980s.” (IRA hunger strikers).

The same article quotes Sammy Wilson saying, “I know from talking to my DUP colleagues and party members that there is total opposition to a terrorist shrine. It would be an absolute scandal if any unionist supports an IRA shrine at this [Maze] site.”

Whilst today’s DUP ‘pumps out’ the notion of the conflict resolution centre not being a shrine to terror because, according to Jeffrey Donaldson, it’s to be “a new purpose-built” structure, what the DUP isn’t ‘pumping out’ for the attention of unionists and, more importantly, all victims of the IRA, is that the H-Block and the hospital wing are still to be preserved – these exact same buildings Nigel Dodds said would be the “shrine to the terrorists”.

Forget this ridiculous conflict resolution centre idea. It’s irrelevant. It’s a distraction from what is the real issue – this H-Block and this hospital wing.

Here is the shrine to terror. These are buildings tourists will be shown around.

‘Proud Citizen’ referred to “political appeasement and capitulation” – excellent point.

Could it possibly be in an Executive, where Sinn Fein has a veto over all Maze development, the ‘price’ for getting so much as one bulldozer on the site is an IRA shrine and realising this the DUP is prepared to ‘roll over’ and pay Sinn Fein’s political ransom?

‘Proud Citizen’ referred to what DUP representatives had to say about the H-Block and hospital wing in the past.

He demands they now state their current position – in the light of the fact these ‘shrine to the terrorists’ buildings are to be kept under proposals now seemingly endorsed by the DUP. ‘Proud Citizen’ is again right.

Why are we not hearing from the DUP’s 2007 ‘shrine objectors’? Why are they silent?

Finally, ‘Proud Citizen’ refers to people in the east of the province needing to ‘waken up and smell the coffee’. If it’s of comfort – some of us love the smell of coffee.

It’s also interesting that in the area that the Maze is situated. The most Prominent Loyalist figure in the said area, which is staunchly Loyalist territory, is an individual who is heavily engaged in so-called peace work with former Republican Prisoners. He recently chaired a meeting at a Hotel in TemplePatrick between Loyalist and Republican Prisoners, such peace-building work between supposedly ex-enemies, receives some of the highest calibre of funding available. Basically a case of money talks and yet another example of so-called loyalists putting money before their people and Country.

Every aspect of loyalism from the paramilitaries and their self-styled community workers/activists to our politicians is absolutely rotten too the core.

Rotten to the core sums it up. They have taken their '30 pieces of silver' for their betrayal. In all of this I have never saw any of those involved who seemed to be acting under duress. Doing something which they really didn't want to be doing. In fact the opposite is the case. So what was the 30 years of defending Ulster all for? The UDR,police, loyalists and the innocent Protestants who lost their lives or were maimed for life. Lundy was a patriot compared to these people. I use to think when they said Lundy was a traitor that he had actually switched sides, but he hadn't. All Lundy wanted to do was parley with the enemy. Well thats exactly what these unionists are doing today. I think there is a good case for stopping the annual burning of Lundy and he be judged by todays standards where people are acting as he did and getting paid for doing so. Its a farce

When you look at what some within our community are doing now, there is actually a good case for the ending of the burning of lundy in all honesty.

‘IRA’ claim gun attack on border
February 29, 2012 at 12:56 pm

REPORTS OF gunmen using Kalashnikov assault rifles to shoot up the house of a Protestant family living along the Fermanagh Cavan border have sparked off fresh fears among the unionist community in the area.
The PSNI are investigating a claim issued by the 32 County Sovereignty Committee that the self-styled South Fermanagh Brigade of the IRA fired shots at a house in the Newtownbutler area in retaliation for recent police raids on republican homes.
Two gunmen armed with AK47 assault rifles reportedly carried out the gun attack at approximately 8pm on Tuesday night of last week.
A caller who claimed to be from the IRA warned the PSNI that, “if they continue with their deliberate harassment and victimisation of republican families, we have no other option than to target the families belonging to them”.

Here we have a gun attack on a Protestant family in South Fermanagh last week, and yet no mention in the media or our politicians or response from those who describe themselves as the 'Defenders of Ulster'.

Well spotted RSAUB and your'e right. I never heard or saw anything about it in any of the media outlets. Nobody wants to go back to the tit-for-tat war. But hushing things up as they are doing is not fair on those who suffered the attack and will not in the long run stop republicans. They are carrying out the agenda put forward by Morrison of the ballot-box and bomb approach. The shinners do the politics and the dissendents provide the muscle. Nudge nudge wink wink to each other.

Very true and in Newtownbutler at the local bands parade, the leader of the CIRA according to the Sunday World! was pictured standing beside MLA Michelle Gildernew of Sinn Fein at the protest to the parade.

There was a petrol bomb attack on the Orange Hall while the band were practising inside it last year and numerous attacks on Protestant property, all a campaign to drive away the few remaining Protestants, and then the border moves up a few more miles.

Ethnic cleansing no doubt. But they are slimy in the way they do it along with a bit of muscle to get their meaning across...Prods out. I still think there is a lot of indifference to their actions because of the way they sell it. Tryin to get the foreigner out of their country. No matter about the most henious crimes they commit there is always that feeling that because its for ould ireland they have a point and a cause. There is only one answer to that stance and you know what I believe it is,but sad to say our people don't want to know.

Yip, even the BBC and UTV and some other News Outlets still refer to the Kingsmill massacre as being carried out by the cover name used by the PIRA to claim responsibility for the atrocity.

Indeed, the cause of fighting for your own land to drive the enemy out, is something everybody can relate too.

The truth is out there and Irish aggression against our people is well documented, but when your own kind start to be swallowed into the big green bog, then your fighting a losing battle as those within and outside are community look at the situation and are in utter confusion.

That middle line is especially true. It is something which the vast majority of people can understand. Its simple and reqires no deep explanations. France for the French,Germany for the Germans,Scotland for the Scottish,England for the English. Wales for the Welsh etec etc. We can see what the common denominator is,all these countries have...a name. As Brett said a good name is prequisite. Never mind a good name,we just haven't got one at all. Well we have but choose to opt out of using it.

Yes true re Kingsmills and I hear them saying on the Ulster news headlines tonight ''case against four UVF terrorists dropped'' terrorists, now thats a word I haven't heard so often used when referring to the ira.

Indeed, especially when on yesterday’s news a Sinn Fein MLA was shown on TV commenting on the case of the UVF super-grass trial, Raymond McCartney a former hunger striker/IRA piece of filth, sitting up in the big house on the hill. A party of respectability, while the UVF men are being labelled as terrorists on the news report. Laughable in the extreme!

Yip, we have a name that is deliberately being eradicated from any political mention by the political establishment. In any other Country, this would actually cause a backlash and make people fight back against this and start using Ulster more and more, but this gradualism game, everything slowly being eradicated over a period of time, seems people just come to except it or even worse just don’t care or just decide to go along with the current trend.
