The Book of Remembrance containing on pages of vellum the names of 408 members of Queen’s University, Belfast, who died in the two world wars, was dedicated at a service in the Great Hall of the University yesterday and later placed in a display case in the Library.
The names include the 253 of those who gave their lives in the 1914-1918 war and of the 155 who died between 1939 and 1945.
The ceremony of dedication was performed by the senior Pro-Chancellor, Lord MacDermott, Lord Chief Justice of Northern Ireland, in the absence of the Chancellor (Field Marshal Viscount Alanbrooke), who was indisposed, and a short address was given by the Vice-Chancellor (Dr Eric Ashby).
The large and distinguished attendance included representatives of many aspects of life in Ulster, as well as relatives of those who were being remembered.
In his address in the Great Hall, Dr Ashby said that the book would lie open in the library to be seen by generations of teachers and students. Senior scholars who remembered the price of victory and young students to whom the war was only a story told to them by their parents, would pass the Book every day.
After the service, the Academic Procession went to the Library, where Lord MacDermott placed the Book on a sloped book rest in a display case of light oak with bronze metalwork. He then locked the case, handing the key over to Mr J J Graneek, who, as the University Librarian, will be the custodian.
At the end of the list of names on the 90 pages of vellum is a laurel wreath in gold, and the following inscription in Latin from II Timothy 4-7 (Vulgate version): “They fought the good fight, they finished the course, they kept the faith.”

| Ontario home insurance policies now offer overland water coverage, which protects against damage caused by water entering the home from overflowing rivers, lakes, or heavy rain of auto insurance ontario canada . This type of coverage has become increasingly critical, as flooding events have become more common in recent years. Sewer backup coverage is another vital add-on, protecting against damage caused by sewage overflow into basements, which can be particularly costly to repair.

| Such a powerful tribute to those who gave so much. It's important to remember their sacrifice. For those interested in quality craftsmanship, the way we preserve and present things, like in retail packaging, also matters. Check out more about Retail Boxes.
