An un-named Garda officer received a substantial amount of money in exchange for betraying two senior RUC officers to the IRA, the Smithwick Tribunal heard on Wednesday.

The allegation was contained in a PSNI intelligence report which has been graded reliable and accurate.

Chief Superintendent Harry Breen and Superintendent Bob Buchanan were murdered in an IRA ambush on the border minutes after leaving a meeting at Dundalk Garda station on March 20, 1989. The Smithwick Tribunal is probing claims that a Garda officer colluded with the IRA in the murders. Former sergeants Owen Corrigan, Leo Colton and Finbarr Hickey have been named in the probe.

However the tribunal has heard for the first time that an un-named Garda officer “who had not been publicly associated at the Tribunal had been paid a considerable amount of money by the IRA for information. This was one of five PSNI intelligence reports that Detective Chief Supt Roy McComb presented a summary of to the tribunal.

They were all graded as reliable and accurate and have been collected together since the tribunal started. Mr McComb could not say why the PSNI has chosen to release this information to the probe now.

The Smithwick Tribunal was set up in 2005. Public hearings commenced in June 2011. The final report is expected later this year.
