Orangemen set off on Boyne drum mission

Friday 10 June 2011 09:12

A LAMBEG drum – carried by Orangemen from across the UK tracing the journey of King William III over 300 years ago – will arrive at the Boyne tomorrow following a mammoth fundraising trek.

Brethren will pass through Ulster towns and villages today on foot in the final overnight leg of their charity drive, en route south to the Boyne heritage centre in Drogheda.

The aim of the walk has been to raise funds for the charity Help For Heroes, which helps injured servicemen and women when they return from duty around the world.
The drum originally set off from King William’s landing place at Brixham, south England, late last year.
Members of London LOL 1689 took the instrument to various functions and events, with the drum visiting Exeter, Portsmouth, The Houses of Parliament, London, Hereford, Manchester and Liverpool on its journey north.

Under the stewardship of Glasgow LOL 162, the drum toured functions across Scotland prior to crossing the North Channel by ferry and arriving in the province yesterday afternoon.

Scottish brethren along with members of Banbridge Bible and Crown Defenders LOL 423 will begin the approximate 100-mile walk from Carrickfergus to Drogheda this morning. They hope to complete the cross-border journey in just over 30 hours.
Speaking ahead of the symbolic trek, Banbridge Orangeman David Watson said the fundraising venture had been a “major exercise for the Orange Institution throughout the United Kingdom”.

“There has certainly been a lot of hard work by a lot of people but the effort and planning has been worth it,” he said.
“We have received tremendous support from our Orange brethren, the length and breadth of the United Kingdom. We have taken the Lambeg drum to the top of Slieve Donard and Ben Nevis for charity, but this trip is really special.
“It is certainly a well-travelled drum and it has been attracting fantastic interest as it has been carried, and played, along the very long route.”
After coming off the boat at Larne yesterday, the Lambeg drum participated in a parade in the town last night prior to being taken to Carrickfergus.
Mr Watson added: “It really is a record-breaking drum and the excellent charity Help for Heroes will benefit considerably as a result. So far we have raised more than £40,000 and we have high hopes that much more will come in during the time the drum is in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.”

Last weekend it emerged the armed forces’ charity has already raised almost £100 million from public donations – just three-and-a-half years after it was formed.
Bryn and Emma Parry were inspired to set up the charity in 2007 after they visited the Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham and met young patients.

The Lambeg drum’s progress can be followed on social networking website, Facebook by searching ‘Drumming for Heroes’.
A donation can also be made to Help for Heroes by sending cheques made payable to LOL 423 c/o 8 Victoria Street, Banbridge, Co Down BT32 3DQ.
