Rural Orange hall damaged in sectarian attack

Monday, 23 January 2012

Sectarian graffiti has been plastered over the walls of an Orange hall in Co Tyrone.

Security lights and drainpipes were also broken during the attack at Ballymacall Orange Hall, midway between Pomeroy and Dungannon.

The vandalism took place some time between Thursday night and Saturday morning.

It is the latest in a series of attacks on the building, which was built in 1985.

Previously it has been damaged in two arson attacks and has also been vandalised on another occasion. In the latest attack, republican graffiti was daubed on the building and an attempt made to remove security grilles protecting the windows.

Franklin Kelly, a member of Ballymacall Lodge, said there was a lot of anger over the attack. “The structural damage is not too bad — it is the annoyance of it more than anything,” he told the Belfast Telegraph.

“Derogatory remarks have been sprayed on the building and I’d like to know how these people would feel if someone went and did the same to their homes.”

A spokesman for the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland condemned the vandalism.

“It is particularly worrying as the Twelfth is being held in Pomeroy this year,” he said.

“We know there are people who do not want any Orange presence in the area and we would ask local community leaders to condemn this attack without reservation.”

Police have appealed for anyone with information to contact them on 0845 600 8000.

The other hall not far away in Pomeroy was burnt not so long ago, what the problem is here, is these attacks are happening that frequently, that you just become immune to them. Which says it all really of how bad the situation has become.
