Bid to bring US statesman's statue to Tyrone

Thursday, 17 May 2012

Councillors in Co Tyrone are considering whether they should make a bid to bring home a statue - currently standing at a US monument site - of one of the area’s most famous historical figures.
Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council heard recently that the statue of Tyrone-born General James Shields is currently standing proudly at National Statuary Hill in Washington DC.
General Shields, was born in the hamlet of Altmore in 1810, became an American politician and United States Army Officer and was the only person in US history to serve as a US Senator for three different states.

Councillors of the Strategic Development Committee agreed to investigate the possibility of bringing General Sheilds’ statue to Tyrone.

Good way of remembering an Ulster-Scot and will also help promote Tyrone in America along with the American Folk park near Omagh.

Yes one of Davy,Stonewall or JEB would be fine. All Ulster-Scots. But knowin the lazy Prod politicans in our midst its very unlikely to happen. Bit like the Jimmy McLarnin thing.
