Bit late with this one. But better late than never, and after all it is 'The Year of the Covenant'

Monument to celebrate Covenant

News Letter Published on Friday 29 June 2012 10:02

THE Hub of the North, otherwise known as Portadown, will host a special, one-off procession tomorrow night to mark the centenary of the Ulster Solemn League and Covenant.
The highlight of the evening will be the unveiling of a new Covenant obelisk in the town centre by the granddaughter and great-grandson of Northern Ireland’s first Prime Minister, Lord Craigavon.
The connections that the greater Portadown area has with the unionist and Protestant traditions are well documented.
The 1641 massacre at the Bann Bridge and the formation of the Orange Order in the late 1700s are just two examples of local events that can lay claim to shaping the modern Ulster unionist identity.

In terms of Home Rule, the town can boast of being the inspiration behind one of the well-known quotes on the subject when MP for North Armagh Edward Saunderson stated in the House of Commons: “Home Rule may pass this House but it will never pass the bridge at Portadown.”
It was no surprise then that in 1912, unionist leader Edward Carson chose Portadown for one of the final pre-Covenant demonstrations.
On September 25, Sir Edward arrived in the town’s train station, greeted by a guard of honour hundreds strong. The men standing in military formation were from the local Unionist Clubs, the forerunner of what was to become the Ulster Volunteer Force.
In a sign of things to come, the Unionist Club members carried dummy wooden rifles. The nationalist press mocked this element of the day’s proceedings – however it proved to be a genuine demonstration of the deep conviction against Home Rule.
Carson made his way through the town’s streets in an open carriage, headed by a unit of 50 men. At 2pm he stood at the statue of Edward Saunderson – on the main street – and, in a tribute to the MP and his views on Home Rule, read a card attached to the statue stating: “Though dead, yet speaketh.”

Here, Carson greeted the procession – consisting of thousands of Unionist Club and Orange Order members. The town centre echoed to the sound of drums and bands as the ranks passed, Carson receiving the salute from all.
He then proceeded to the town’s showgrounds where an elaborately decorated stage carried the slogan, “We Will Not Have Home Rule”. During a stirring oration, the silent and respectful crowd was told in no uncertain terms that, in the battle for unionism, “Portadown will not be behind”.

Just a few days later, over 95 per cent of the district’s eligible population penned their signatures on the Ulster Covenant and the Ulster Declaration.
The local fondness for Carson was to manifest itself again some 25 years later when a stained glass window was erected in the famous Edgarstown Orange Arch.
That portrait remained a focal point for half-a-century before the arch was seriously damaged in a storm. The glass, however, survived and this year has been restored to a prominent position in Carleton Street Orange Hall.

Tomorrow evening’s procession has been organised by the Portadown Unionist Centenary Committee. The main parade begins at 7pm. More than 20 bands and Lambeg drumming teams will head a parade of several thousand Orangemen from Brownstown Park to the town centre.
The obelisk will be dedicated by the rector of St Mark’s Parish Church, the Rev Jim Campbell.

A commemorative booklet, priced at £3, has been printed to mark the Covenant monument. For more details, email portadownunionistcentenarycommittee@hotmail.co.uk .
Meanwhile, in Banbridge tomorrow, there will be an Orange parade and re-enactment as part of the Covenant centenary celebrations.
The parade of 16 lodges and bands will leave Banbridge Orange Hall at noon and makes its way around the town.
l The annual Whiterock Orange parade on the Shankill Road and other parts of west and north Belfast takes place tomorrow afternoon, involving more than 1,000 Orangemen and 20 bands.

Ulster Protestants consider themselves to be a separate nation. This nation they call Ulster
